Tim Schwartz (b. 1981) focuses on data privacy and digital information as an artist, activist, and technologist. Schwartz received a BA from Wesleyan University in Physics and a MA from UCSD in Visual Arts. He is the author of A Public Service: Whistleblowing, Disclosure, & Anonymity published by OR Books. Schwartz co-organizes the digital training organization Los Angeles Cryptoparty, a member of the Electronic Frontier Alliance. After developing technology to reunite missing people affected by the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, he began organizing the Missing Persons Community of Interest, which develops technology for reunifying families after disasters. From 2004 to 2007, Schwartz was the Assistant Curator of Digital Media at the Museum of the Moving Image in NYC. He lives in Los Angeles.
“[He] makes his playful data mashups into sculptures using retired gadgets… Like a field scientist of the information age, Schwartz filters an overwhelming amount of data through the intuitive logic of old-fashioned tools such as weather gauges, maps, and charts. Taken together, his works constitute a kind of contemporary natural history museum in which we are the subjects being examined.”
